An operation to clear Tartus of supporters of the former government has begun in Syria

Syria's military operations command together with the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the launch of an operation to clear Tartus province of armed groups opposed to the new authorities in Damascus, reports the Syrian SANA agency.

On Thursday night, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the interim government of Syria announced the death of 14 of its employees in the suburbs of Tartus as a result of an ambush, allegedly carried out by the supporters of the country's former leader Bashar al-Assad.

"The Military Operations Command launched a joint operation with the Ministry of Interior to ensure peace and security by pursuing Assad's police in the forested and mountainous areas of Tartus," the agency writes.

According to the agency, several members of the armed forces have already been killed in the operation. The pursuit of others continues.
