Greenland's parliament reminded Trump that the island is not for sale

Greenland MP Aaya Schemnitz said US President-elect Donald Trump's comments about the importance of ownership and control of Greenland were "very disrespectful" and suggested Trump intended to "buy" the island.

"Greenland is not for sale yet," the Ritzau agency quoted the politician as saying.

"I think that the words "ownership" and "control" of the future US president determine the foreign and security policy of the entire Western world. It's a pretty clear signal that they want to buy Greenland, and it's also disrespectful to Danish politicians to say that this decision is up to Denmark."

At the same time, Schemnitz is not against the expansion of cooperation with the USA. As an example, he cites the opening of the American consulate in Greenland. But the inhabitants of the island do not want to become part of the United States, the deputy believes.

"This decision is for Greenland and the people of Greenland. We have extended self-government in Greenland. And as far as I know, no party in Greenland wants to become an American citizen," he added.
