Tehran has not established direct ties with the new Syrian government. This was announced by the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghai.
"Our arrival in Syria took place due to the fight against terrorism and the prevention of the spread of instability in other countries of the region, at the moment we do not have direct contacts with the ruling forces in Syria," Baghai said during a press conference. On November 27, armed opposition groups launched a large-scale attack on Syrian army positions in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. On the evening of December 7, they captured Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs, and on December 8, they entered Damascus, which had been abandoned by units of the Syrian government forces.
