UN peacekeepers continue to remain in their positions, despite the fact that Israel occupied the buffer zone. CNN:

Despite the fact that the Israeli army has occupied the buffer zone between Israel and Syria, the UN peacekeepers continue to remain in their positions, the mission's press service told CNN.

"They are there doing their job, just like yesterday and the day before," said spokesman Nick Birnbeck.

The UN Security Council created the Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in 1974 after Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967, and Syria failed to recapture the area in 1973.

Birnbeck stated that without changing the UNDOF mandate given by the Security Council, the peacekeepers will remain in place. The Security Council last extended the UNDOF mission in June until the end of the year.

The "separation zone" in Syria was created as a demilitarized zone, which must be monitored by the United Nations.
