Dmitry Polyansky, the deputy representative of Russia at the UN, said that the emergency meeting was convened at the initiative of Russia. The session will take place at 15:00 New York time. After capturing Homs, Syrian anti-government forces captured Damascus on December 8 without encountering any resistance.

Referring to the developments in Syria, US President Joe Biden stated that this is a historic moment for Syrians to build a better future.
