Almost 100 thousand people took part in strikes by Volkswagen workers

Almost 100 thousand employees of the Volkswagen automaker took part in warning strikes throughout Germany, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported, citing the country's largest trade union IG Metall. The warning strikes against plans to close part of production and lay off employees began on Monday and ended with the start of the morning shift on Tuesday.

In total, 98,650 employees of nine factories throughout Germany took part in the strikes, of which 47 thousand employees of the Wolfsburg plant, 12.5 thousand in Bauntal (Kassel district) and 9 thousand each in Zwickau and Hannover.

"The first warning strikes were an absolutely decisive signal from the workers against the cruel plans of the Volkswagen board," said union spokesman Thorsten Gröger.
