On a wide front, they attacked populated areas and military positions, and on November 29 they launched a large-scale operation. A day later, on November 30, Aleppo and its surroundings, including the international airport and the Kuweiris military airfield, came under the control of terrorists.
Militants managed to completely capture Syria's second largest city for the first time since the crisis began in 2011. Until the end of 2016, the armed opposition controlled only the eastern part of the settlement, but the Syrian army drove it out of there with the support of the Aerospace Forces.
The Syrian army responded to the attack, as a result the militants suffered losses in manpower and equipment. On December 1, their advance in Hama was stopped and government troops launched a counteroffensive, liberating some captured settlements.
