The first sanitary landfill in accordance with EU standards is being built in Armenia


According to the international agreement signed between the Republic of Armenia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the "Solid Domestic Waste Management Program of Kotayk and Gegharkunik Marzes" is in the process of being implemented, within the framework of which it is planned to build the first sanitary landfill in accordance with EU standards, waste transfer stations, as well as also to implement an integrated and effective garbage collection system in all settlements of the two marzes.

The total budget of the project is EUR 11.0 million, of which EUR 5.5 million is a loan, EUR 5.5 million is a grant.

3.5 million of the latter is provided by the European Neighborhood Investment Fund (NIF), and 2.0 million from the Eastern European Energy Efficiency and Environmental Partnership Program (E5P).

Within the framework of the project, the first sanitary landfill was built in the territory of Hrazdan community with its relevant infrastructures and garbage transfer stations in Akunk and Martuni settlements.

28 Renault garbage trucks, 6,000 garbage cans, an excavator, a bulldozer, a crane, a dump truck, and a sewage collection truck have already been purchased.

Within the framework of the project, the "Kotayk and Gegharkunik KKTC" joint-stock company was established by 12 urban settlements of two marzes, but the financial means necessary for the maintenance and start-up of the company are not provided for in the loan and grant agreements of the project.

In its today's session, the government decided to allocate 34 million 720 thousand drams for this purpose.
