Kazakhstan’s unicameral parliament, the Kurultai, should consider as a priority a draft law that would ban access to social media for those under 16. This was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The legislative initiative was submitted by the Kazakh government.
President Tokayev said that he supports the initiative and believes that the issue should be considered as a priority. During his speech at the inaugural session of the Kurultai, President Tokayev said that the state is obliged to create a comfortable and, most importantly, safe and secure environment for adolescents. He also stressed that it is important that the legislative initiative also provide for the mechanisms by which the law will be implemented.
