Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a new kind of strategic partnership between China and Canada. He announced this during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Beijing.
"The two sides, aware of their responsibilities to history, their peoples and the whole world, should promote the construction of a new type of strategic partnership between China and Canada and put bilateral relations on a path of healthy and stable development," China Central Television quoted the Chinese president as saying.
The president also emphasized that "the healthy and stable development of China-Canada relations serves the common interests of both countries and contributes to global stability and prosperity."
In recent years, relations between Beijing and Ottawa have become more strained.
