The US is withdrawing from its allies and retreating from international rules. Macro

In his traditional New Year's address to French ambassadors in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the United States is "gradually withdrawing" from some allies and "moving away from international rules."

"The United States is a stable power, but it is gradually withdrawing from some of its allies and retreating from the international rules it has recently promoted, whether it is trade, certain aspects of security or certain organizations," Macron said.

"We live in a world where the rules are being broken and multilateral institutions are working less and less effectively. We exist in the world of great powers, which have their obvious temptation to divide the world," said the French president, adding that he considers this "a great risk for the international order in which we live."

Macron believes that "strategic autonomy" and "less dependence on the United States as well as China" are the right direction for French and EU policy.
