The convincing victory of UNESCO Director General Khaled al-Anani is an encouraging sign, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
"We consider the convincing victory of the Egyptian representative Khaled al-Anani in the elections of the new general director as an encouraging sign.
During the pre-election campaign, he advocated the reform of UNESCO, primarily by depoliticizing its activities.
"In other words, to reform what the French general director, who held this position before our Egyptian colleague, brought to the activity of the organization," Lavrov said at the meeting of the Russian Federation Commission on UNESCO.
"We welcome the new Director General's commitment to strengthen the role of member states in the organization's governance and ensure its financial transparency and accountability," Lavrov noted.
