The Israeli side is convinced that such a meeting could be interpreted as recognition of the status of Hamas by the US, which could complicate further indirect negotiations between Israel and the radical movement.

Earlier, the Maan news agency, which is close to Hamas, reported on the planned meeting between Vitkoff and the Hamas delegation in Istanbul, which, in addition to al-Hayi, may be attended by several other high-ranking representatives of the Palestinian movement.
As the agency noted, the planned negotiations between Trump's special representative and the leadership of Hamas may indicate the intention of the American administration to maintain direct ties with the radical movement.
The US president's special envoy and the leader of Hamas in Gaza met in Egypt in October before reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian enclave. Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of the US president, also participated in the negotiations.
