General Secretary for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, Gert Jan Koopman, gave a speech at the EU-Turkey Business Summit. He noted that Turkey and the EU share the same geography and each other's economies are closely interconnected.
According to Kumpan, Turkey is a crucial actor contributing to regional stability and connectivity. In particular, he noted that due to its geographical location, Turkey is an important country in various issues, including Syria, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, and the establishment of long-term peace in the South Caucasus. Kupman noted that the EU and Turkey have common interests in increasing cooperation and emphasized the importance of dialogue.
"If the constructive engagement continues and we see progress towards the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, the work on the modernization of the Customs Union will also resume. This, of course, will help reshape the full potential of EU-Turkey relations," he stressed.
