Britain will deploy four Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines over 15-20 years to replace Vanguard submarines carrying Trident II ballistic missiles, reports the Financial Times (FT).
In the shipyards of the English city of Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria), 12 attack submarines will be built simultaneously within the framework of AUKUS (military alliance of Australia, Great Britain and the United States), which are designed to patrol the sea lanes of the North Atlantic Ocean from the end of the 2030s.
As it was reported earlier, the keel laying ceremony of Britain's newest nuclear submarine, the fourth-generation flagship submarine of the same name, "Dreadnought," took place on March 20 at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.
According to media reports, the new 153.6-meter submarines, with a crew of 130, will be equipped with the latest Rolls-Royce PWR3 nuclear reactor, which features enhanced safety and longer maintenance intervals between scheduled maintenance checks.
