The Trump administration has begun detailed planning of a new operation against drug cartels in Mexico, NBC reports, citing its sources.
According to their information, the plan includes sending US military and intelligence personnel to conduct ground operations in Mexico. It is noted that the scale of the operation is still being discussed, and a final decision has not yet been made.
U.S. forces are expected to use the drones primarily to target the locations of drug cartel members and leaders.
Unlike Venezuela, the operation in Mexico is not aimed at disrupting the country's government, according to two current and two former US officials.
As The New York Times reported in August, Trump had secretly signed an order to begin using military force against Latin American drug cartels.
