The president of South Korea has announced his desire to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula

South Korea will continue to take preventive measures to reduce military tensions and build trust with North Korea in order to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and the entire region, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said.

"Military conflict, tensions and nuclear issues are hindering stability and cooperation not only on the Korean Peninsula, but also in the entire Asia-Pacific region," he said in a speech at the closing of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Gyeongju, South Korea.

The South Korean leader emphasized that "the Republic of Korea is striving to open a new page on the Korean Peninsula through peaceful coexistence and common prosperity, guided by the principle of resolving issues through dialogue."
