Since the beginning of the conflict in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Israel has built about 1,000 barriers in the West Bank, limiting the freedom of movement of local residents and greatly complicating daily life, the Associated Press (AP) reports, citing the Palestinian Authority.
As the publication notes, the number of barriers erected is unprecedented. According to the Palestinian Committee Against the Separation Wall and Jewish Settlements, cited by the AP, 916 barriers, including gates, fences and walls, have been erected in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict.
The agency cites as an example the metal gates that are installed at the entrances to many villages and towns in the West Bank.
These barriers prevent entry and exit, and are sometimes patrolled by Israeli troops. Palestinians told the agency that the working hours of the checkpoint are unpredictable. the gates may be closed and inoperable for several days.
