Malaysia is awaiting a response from BRICS on its membership application

Malaysia has informed BRICS of its desire to join the group and is awaiting a response. This was announced to TASS by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, within the framework of the recently concluded Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Kuala Lumpur.

"We informed them. We are waiting for their answer", he said in response to the question about the next step of joining the association.

Earlier, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated at a press conference after his state visit to Malaysia that the country "can count on Brazil's full support" in its quest to join BRICS as a full member.

Malaysia is not a full member of BRICS, but participates in joint initiatives with the group's countries in areas such as trade, energy and infrastructure development.
