European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is pursuing an inconsistent policy of "strategic autonomy," making the EU dependent on the United States and severing ties with China. This opinion is expressed by the authors of "China Daily" newspaper.
"By defending the EU's 'independence' from major trading partners like China, while acknowledging the bloc's deep dependence on the US for energy, resources and security, von der Leyen shows a striking inconsistency," said the European Commission head in a recent statement calling for the EU to reduce its dependence on strategic raw materials from China.
The authors remind that European-American trade relations are facing difficulties due to the growing pressure from the White House, which also forces Brussels to "follow the US line on the geopolitical front".
