Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has stated that the radical Palestinian Hamas movement can become a political party if it meets a number of conditions.
"Hamas still has a chance to become a political party if the movement accepts the principles of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which recognizes Israel, respects its international obligations and supports the two-state solution," he said in an interview with "Corriere della Sera" newspaper.
Speaking about the parliamentary and presidential elections, Abbas noted that they can be held within a year after the end of hostilities, while news about the preparation of the interim constitution will be announced in the coming months. "We are working on two legislative provisions, regarding elections and parties," he explained.
On November 7, Abbas will visit Italy and meet Pope Leo XIV.
