Madrid urges the EU to maintain sanctions against Israel

The Spanish government supports the maintenance of EU measures against Israel, despite the agreements recently signed by the Jewish state with the radical Palestinian movement Hamas. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom, Jose Manuel Albarez, upon his arrival at the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

"We are very far from what we want: final peace, a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian aid, the prospect of a two-state solution," the diplomat noted. In his opinion, "sanctions should be maintained" against the Jewish state.

In September, the European Commission (EC) proposed a series of measures against Israel related to its actions in the Gaza Strip.

The package proposes to suspend some of the trade provisions of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, in particular, to deny Israeli goods preferential access to the European market.
