German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful welcomed the upcoming meeting between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Budapest.
"In general, I consider it a good development that the negotiations will finally continue," Vadeful told reporters before leaving for Turkey.
He noted that he considers this meeting between Putin and Trump to be a preliminary step towards direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
"If this is being held with the clear purpose of holding peace talks, then holding the meeting in Budapest is acceptable," he said, referring to the location of the upcoming Russian-American summit.
On Thursday, after a phone call with Putin, Trump announced that they had agreed to meet soon in Budapest. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov also announced that Moscow and Washington will "immediately" start preparing for a new meeting between the leaders of Russia and the US, which may take place in the Hungarian capital.
