Estonian authorities have announced plans to complete within a year the construction of a bypass on the previously closed Varska-Saatse highway, which partly passes through Russia's so-called Saatse shoe. This was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs of the republic, Igor Taro.
"We must do everything possible to build this road as quickly as possible. We will achieve this within a year at the most, maybe even sooner, but we also have the opportunity to widen the narrow bypass roads, which are currently slightly shorter than this 20-kilometer circle," the minister said, as quoted by state broadcaster ERR.
According to Taro, Estonian authorities had previously planned to conduct an environmental impact assessment before construction of the bypass road began, but the environmental impact assessment was canceled due to government plans to speed up construction of the road.
