Iranian President says sanctions threaten international peace

The introduction of sanctions threatens international peace; BRICS must set an example of equal cooperation. This was stated by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the "outreach" / "BRICS plus" meeting within the framework of the 16th summit of the association. "The introduction of unilateral restrictive measures has jeopardized international peace, many development processes have encountered problems due to coercive and restrictive measures < ...> the United States and Western countries, therefore BRICS and BRICS Plus must develop and implement transparent, fair, inclusive and non-discriminatory principles for cooperation,” he said.

International sanctions have a destructive impact on international relations and prevent countries from accessing their financial resources, making it difficult for them to actively participate in international cooperation processes,” the Iranian leader emphasized. The BRICS group was founded in 2006, in 2011 to the original composition (Brazil, Russia , India and China) joined by South Africa.

Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia became full members of the organization on January 1, 2024. On the same day, the chairmanship of BRICS passed to the Russian Federation for a year. On October 22, the 16th summit of the association began in Kazan, which will last until October 24.
