A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook the east coast of the northern Island of Japan, the country's main meteorological department reported.

The epicenter was reported in the Pacific Ocean near the city of Kushiro on a depth of 20 kilometers. The maximum magnitude of the tremors was three points on a seven-point scale adopted in Japan. The tremors were felt in three prefectures. There is no tsunami threat.

No casualties or damage were received.
