Orban called for making Bulgaria and Romania full members of Schengen

The Prime Minister of the Hungarian presidency of the European Union, Viktor Orban, called for making Bulgaria and Romania full members of the Schengen zone, and for Serbia to be admitted to the EU. “The Hungarian presidency recommends not only the strengthening and expansion of the Schengen zone, but also the full accession of Bulgaria and Romania by the end of the year,” - said Orbán, presenting the program of the Hungarian Presidency of the European Parliament, broadcast by HirTV.

The Hungarian Prime Minister also proposed creating a system of regular Schengen summits with the participation of heads of state and government of the Schengen area to resolve the crisis situation.

"According to the Hungarian Presidency, accelerating the accession of the Western Balkans to the EU is a key issue of European security. Integration of the region is beneficial to the EU from the point of view of economics, security and geopolitics. We must pay special attention to Serbia. The Balkans cannot be stabilized without the inclusion of Serbia. For now, Serbia will not become a member of the European Union, the Balkans will remain an unstable region,” he noted. According to him, a number of candidate countries already meet the conditions for further European integration, but there is “no political consensus” between the member countries.
