"China has not had an ambassador in Armenia for about 7 months. This is an unprecedented and exceptional phenomenon in the history of Armenian-Chinese relations.
Naturally, this is a very clear message, there are no coincidences in such cases," writes political scientist Suren Sargsyan, whose father, Armen Sargsyan, was the RA ambassador to China.
Suren Sargsyan assures that Beijing has hundreds of professionals in its diplomatic arsenal who can be sent to Yerevan today.
And what are the reasons for such an approach?
1. First, despite the assurances given at a high level, Armenia does not show any interest in the "Road and Belt" mega-project and does nothing to be part of it. From this point of view, the Chinese approach is very clear, there are states that are friendly to the project, and there are those opposed to it.
2. Armenia still remains part of the de facto non-existent Anti-China Religious Freedom Alliance (not to be confused with the Religious Freedom Summit), although its founder, former US Secretary of State Pompeo, himself represented its anti-China nature. In fact, the alliance has been defunct for more than 4 years Armenia continues to be formally part of it.
3. It is also important to remember that Armenia is the country that received the Minister of Economy of Taiwan, with a commitment to refrain from any direct contacts with Taiwan officials. The issue of Taiwan is the most sensitive topic for China and it does not tolerate any opinion other than one China principle.
After all, such an approach by our Chinese colleagues is quite logical and reasonable. Superpowers cannot be treated this way.
