Macron will miss the EU summit and meeting with Ukraine due to travel to Mayotte

French President Emmanuel Macron may cancel his personal participation in the EU summit on December 19, as well as the high-level meeting on Ukraine in Brussels due to his trip to Mayotte in the Indo-French overseas territory.

The head of the country should participate in the EU-Western Balkans summit in Brussels on Wednesday evening. After that, he was supposed to participate in an informal meeting organized by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte with the participation of a number of EU leaders, where it was planned to discuss the issue of supporting Ukraine in the conflict with the Russian Federation.

However, the trip to Mayotte "could interfere with Macron's initial plans", the agency claims. The Elysée Palace does not rule out that he will have time to attend this event, but if he is unable to do so, retired Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Baro will take part in his place.

Against the background of such uncertainty, Macron intends to have a telephone conversation with the NATO Secretary General before leaving for Brussels and "to meet Vladimir Zelensky in the framework of the EU-Western Balkans summit".
