The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at a press conference with the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced an additional 1 billion euros in aid for Syrian refugees in the country.
According to the latest data, there are three million Syrian citizens living in Turkey who fled the civil war in 2011. The funds will be used for the health care and education of refugees, "migration and border management", and the "voluntary return" of citizens.
The return of Syrians to their homeland should be "dignified and safe", stressed Ursula von der Leyen. Since 2011, Turkey has received about 10 billion euros in aid from the European Union to support refugees.
