Türkiye counts on contacts with Iran and Russia on Syria

Türkiye expects to be in contact with Iran and Russia in the new period in Syria to resolve problems, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.

“In the new period, we will talk with both Iran and Russia, and we will try to solve problems in a way that is beneficial to both parties, without conflicts,” Fidan said in an interview with Al Arabiya TV channel.

According to the minister, he does not believe that Tehran and Moscow will aggravate the situation in Syria.

“I don’t think Iran or Russia will do this. Iran and Russia are two countries with highly developed decision-making mechanisms. They see the data coming from the field, it is necessary to adapt to the new era as soon as possible and continue,” Fidan said.

On December 8, representatives of the armed opposition in Syria seized state television in Damascus and announced on air that they had established control over the country. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said that he and several ministers remain in the country and have established contact with the leadership of the armed opposition. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, after negotiations with a number of participants in the conflict, decided to resign from his post and left the country, giving instructions to peacefully transfer power, while Russia did not participate in the negotiations.
