The value of the assets of the former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's family can reach 12 billion dollars. This was published in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
According to the publication, an international hunt for the funds has begun, but their detection and freezing will be problematic.
The WSJ article states that the former Syrian leader, along with his late father, Hafez Assad, used their relatives to hide capital abroad.
Former White House official Andrew Tabler told the publication that Assad always had a backup plan that would allow him to leave the country if necessary.
"They always had a plan B," he explained.
